The Cell and Molecular Biology Program was created in 1978, under the name of Morphology Program, offering Master’s degree. In 1987, the program was reformed to include the field of cell biology. Since the year 2000, the Institute of Molecular Biology of Paraná (IBMP) joined the University faculty members to supervise candidates to Master’s degree. By that time, after submitting a project to CAPES, the PhD program was approved by Ministerial Ordinance 2264. Thus, from 2002 onwards, students started to do research and to be trained leading to the PhD degree. In the view of those changes, the program changed its name to Cell and Molecular Biology Graduate Program, with two concentration areas: Cell and Molecular Biology, and Physiology.

Nowadays, the Program include faculty members of the departaments of Anatomy, Cell Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Physiology, and Basic Pathology at Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) as well as from Carlos Chagas Institute (ICC – FioCruz) (former IBMP).

Collaborations with institutions in Brazil and abroad are currently going on, focused on better qualifying students to their future as researchers. Faculty members have scientific cooperation with Institute Pasteur (France), Virginia Commonwealth University (USA), Université du Québec (Canada), University of Moncton (Canada), University of Georgia (USA), Water Research Institute Fishes and Oceans (Canada), University of Davis (USA), Universitat de Barcelona (Spain), McMaster University (Canada), Harvard University (USA), and Yale University (USA). Our program continually encourages students to develop part of their thesis activities abroad, in a sandwich program.

Since its creation, 328 Master’s thesis and 148 PhD dissertations have been defended (position up to the end of 2020).

Mission

The Graduate Program in Cell and Molecular Biology of the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) aims to provide broad and deep scientific training in Cell and Molecular Biology, forming professionals in the master’s and phD courses for higher education and scientific research.
